BauerLatoza Studio was retained by United Water and the City of Gary Parks Department to design a new bandshell for the City of Gary’s Centennial. The bandshell will be located in a natural bowl area in Marquette Park.
The design concept is predicated on the City of Gary’s important role as one of the world’s largest steel producers. The building is constructed of an innovative steel mast structural system that suspends radial steel barrel roofs by cables. To incorporate the metal structure into the terrain, the overall design of the building is one that will blend into the surrounding wooded area, emphasizing the natural backdrop for the band shell. The undersides of the roofs are lined with cedar to provide acoustical enhancements. The back-of-the-house building consists of a green room, public toilets, and a concession area.
The site design incorporates seating for 250 people and a lawn area that will accommodate an additional 1,500 patrons. Native landscaping will be installed to minimize water and maintenance issues.
